Description: At the end of the module the student should be able to: - Explain epidemiology and sociocultural concepts of Global Mental Health in different settings - Debate colonial continuities in Global Mental Health today - Define frequently seen neuropsychiatric disorders, mental health conditions and neurological disorders (e.g. depression, addiction, schizophrenia, epilepsy, PTSD) and identify corresponding treatment options - Discuss ethical considerations regarding Global Mental Health - Distinguish core aspects of Mental Health care planning
Assessment Procedures: Oral examination with closed as well as open questions for discussion (Grading A-D, F); 60% pass threshold. In case of failure of the examination, students will be assigned a 2000-word essay on a topic as defined by the facilitator. It can be resubmitted within two weeks after the course.
Content: - Sociocultural concepts of mental health globally and in Low- and Middle-Income settings - Epidemiology of mental health conditions globally - Stigmatization and sociocultural aspects of Mental Health - Overview of the g lobal history of Mental Health care and its colonial past as well as Decolonising approaches in general - Classifications in Mental Health - Global Mental health care provision: examples from Low- and Middle-Income settings. - Designing a theoretical basic mental health care provision package, planning of mental health interventions based on the principles of mental health care provision and planning - Trauma and PTSD and associated disorders management in In resource limited settings - Addiction and substance abuse: the mental health perspective - Depression and psychotic disorders - Mental health in children and adolescents: the example of Ethiopia - Ethics and legal aspects in Mental Health care in general
Methods: - Participants receive pre-course reading assignments. Those will be essential for students to follow the face-to-face course (45 hours self-study) - Interactive lectures (35 hours) - Tutored Group Work including the possibility of having a Q&A with an expert from a LMIC (8 hours)
Prerequisites: Proof of English fluency: tropEd students from an accredited tropEd home institution who have passed a core course in English language will be considered sufficiently fluent in English language. Also students who can provide proof of academic education passed entirely in English language will be considered sufficiently fluent. Applicants not being able to provide either of these criteria will be asked to proof fluency by a TOEFL (iBT score >= 79) or IELTS (score >=6.5). This is equivalent to a C1 English proficiency

Major changes since initial accreditation: Name was changed to the concept of Global Mental Health, sessions on post-colonialism and Global Mental Health today were included, group work was extended and an expert interview was added. Some sessions were cancelled (e.g. Khat research)
Student evaluation: - The sessions were highly interactive; group tasks and presentations Very much enjoyed the expert interview as it was both engaging and informative - There should be a Global Health focus - More group-activities and active participation please - In general maintain the structure, but maybe some more interactive work, even some individual work or group work to engage more the participants. Some days were very crowded with "typical" presentations from the lecturers. - I liked how it included very detailed information about Ethiopia, including political situations, health, stigma and also the measures taken to improve the situation. - Khat presentation was interesting but I had a feeling she was just reading out the slides, It would be interesting to make it interactive - The lecture about Khat in my opinion was not needed - I appreciate the course focusing on the global health aspects rather than only clinical aspects of mental health. The sessions addressing decolonialization, cultural sensitivity and barriers related to low and middle income countries were of high value to me.
Lessons learned: The experience has shown that course works best as an in-presence course due to the nature of the group work and discussions. To include more speakers from LMI settings, a hybrid format for lectures has worked quite well nevertheless. Since the pandemic, an entire hybrid format also for participants is always considered if needed as well. International students who cannot travel to Munich or do not have the financial means to, might be able to also participate hybridly if enough participants for this are found and therefore this balances out with the in-presence participation.
tropEd accreditation: Accredited in Hanoi GA in March 2018 and in EC Telco in August 2023. This accreditation is valid until August 2028.
