Description:
Microscopy plays a prominent role in parasitology for malaria diagnosis and detection of intestinal helminths infections. Each protocol and technique has its difficulties and limitations, and the performance of microscopists is very much reflected by knowledge and working practice. Control procedures have to verify accuracy and reliability of the issued test results. The Medical Research Unit at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital (MRU-ASH) in Lambaréné, Gabon, is a leading African research center for infectious diseases found in sub-Saharan Africa. Here, I present the establishment of adapted and modified multiplex real-time PCR assays with previously demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity for the quality control of routine microscopy at MRU-ASH. Results from quality control of microscopy for mala-rial parasites and soil-transmitted helminths are presented.
