Description:
The overall aim of this course is to explore knowledge creation to ensure that research findings are not only accessible but also used to inform policy, practice, and system-level change.

At the end of the module the student should be able to:
● Critically discusss Integrated Knowledge Translation (iKT) in comparison with traditional knowledge translation models.
● Identify and apply the ethical, political, and relational dimensions of engaging stakeholders in research.
● Design a research plan using iKT principles and quantitative and qualitative methods
● Critically evaluate case studies of successful and unsuccessful iKT partnerships.
● Discuss different communication tools and strategies tailored for various knowledge user audiences.
Assessment Procedures:
Stakeholder mapping and analysis: By day 2 the participants will present a visual map/written plan outlining the various stakeholders for their topic of interest, including their roles and expectations.

iKT Research Plan and Engagement Proposal: By day 5 the groups will present to their peers their updated research question, roles of their stakeholders throughout the research cycle, an engagement proposal and an evaluation plan for the expected impact. The participants will also submit their personal action plans.

The peers will give a grade (30%) and finally the course coordinators will also give a grade on the individual action plans (70%).

Pass Grade: 60% (as average of both grades)

Content:
1. Foundations of integrated Knowledge Translation
Definition of Integrated knowledge translation and the key differences from traditional Knowledge Translation, its core principles and frameworks as well as the ethics and politics of collaborative research
Group Activity: Mapping research or interest area to an iKT model

2. Partnering with Knowledge Users
Exposure to Stakeholder mapping tools, navigating power dynamics and building authentic relationships
Group Activity: Stakeholder identification and engagement strategy

3. Designing Research with Impact
Co-developing research design and methodology with stakeholders,
Group Activity: Develop an iKT research plan

4. Effective Knowledge Communication
Understanding your audience, knowledge mobilization vs. translation and selecting an effective dissemination tool
Group Activity: Peer reviewing a Policy Brief

5. Evaluating and sustaining iKT
Logic models and evaluation tools for IKT as well as strategies for sustaining the partnership beyond the project
Activity: presentation of group iKT plans and submission of individual action plan
Methods:
(a) Pre-reading and overview of required templates (15 hrs)
(b) Lectures with participatory activities and discussion time (15 hrs)
(c) Plenary discussions and group exercises (20 hrs)
(d) Facilitated drafting of individual action plan (4 hrs)
(e) Final peer assessment of iKT plans (6 hrs)

English: TOEFL test 5.5 or IELTS 6.5 or equivalent language skills
