Dr. Axel Hoffmann
Dr. Axel Hoffmann has a degree in psychology (Dipl.-Psych.) and a PhD in Psychology, Medical Sociology and Criminology from the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg i. Brsg., Germany. He has also worked as a psychotherapist (behavioral therapy and hypnotherapy).
Axel Hoffmann is head of the Teaching and Training Unit at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute in Basel, Switzerland. In this function he is responsible for the postgraduate master programme in International Health, and activities of the institute in continuing education for several professions. He represents the institute’s postgraduate Master in International Health in the Swiss School of Public Health (SSPH+). Together with the SSPH+ and the University in Lugano he is organizing a yearly Summer School on Health Policy, Economics and Management. He is also member of the Steering Boardf of the Swiss MPH programme of the universities Basel, Bern and Zürich, and member of the Advisory Committee for the Master of Public Health and the Master in International health at the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT), Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Besides several teaching responsibilities in Switzerland and Europe he has consultancy appointments with the Swiss Center for International Health, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, GTZ and others in the field of teaching and training and curriculum development. In addition, he has been working with several partners (WHO, GTZ, etc.) in the field of knowledge management and knowledge transfer in the health sector. He is also involved in two EU-funded FP7 projects on capacity building and curriculum development in African countries, with special attention to Health Policy and Systems Research and Advanced Epidemiology Research Training.
